Villein

A villein is a tenant of a feudal landholder. It is synonymous with a serf . Most of the members of all the Hyperion clans are of this class, and support their respective clans by harvesting mesne land for their lords and paying an income tax. The Hyperion Royal Court refers to all serfs in all shires collectively as coloni. Coloni are usually allowed to voluntarily enlist in the military in order to lessen their manorial obligations to their liege lords. In the military, coloni are eligible for no ranks other than pedus, miles and serviens.
Wessex
In Wessexshire, every new member starts as trial member, and then villein. This is the basic class in the Duchy. Villeins are bound to His Grace, the Duke, or a vassal of Wessex by oath and must work and pay taxes unto their lords, not unlike donating to a clan bank. As villeins are the largest part of the population, they also make up the majority of the Wessexian military.
