Fief

A fief is a grant of land given by a lord to a vassal. In Wessex's case, a Knight, Baronet, or Thane recieves a grant of land from His Grace. When a knight receives a fief, he is given a group of villeins and soldiers to populate it. It is the knights job to tax and protect his fief. Some fiefs are in the form of subguilds, land given to other guild leaders who have sworn fealty to Wessex.
